What do professional shoppers like the best? Sales! Only if you’re not a millionaire and can’t afford paying, for example, $1,000 for a watch when you could get one for $100, I’m more than sure there would be a smile on your face when you see a “Buy One, Get One Free” sale in your favorite store.
It seems to be a natural reaction, because if there is a sign like that, then it means that you pay for one item and get the other one totally free of charge. This theory is logical and common. But is it completely true?
First off, there is one question that needs an answer. What’s the store’s profit?
You may not often notice it, but the price of the item that is “Buy One, Get One Free” is higher than the price at which the store bought it from the manufacturer. This way it somehow covers the price of the second item. The company might not have a profit in this kind of sale.
Stores usually use this technique to sell the products very quickly, even quicker than the usual 50 percent off sales. Why? Because every time a customer decides to buy an item on this kind of sale, he actually buys two at once.
“Buy One, Get One At 50% Off” sales are clearly not as big as they sound.
Of course, there are always exceptions and there might be stores where the customer really gets a deal in the “Buy One, Get One Free” sale. But before you go crazy when shopping in the store, make sure you’re informed about the real price of that specific item.
It’s still one of the smart shopping tips, which saves you money and, in most cases, provides quality as well. You should just remember that you are probably not saving a fortune when you buy one and get one free.
