The name of the iris flower comes from the name of Iris in Greek mythology. She was the goddess of the rainbow and the messenger of gods.
The iris comes in almost every color, though the most popular one is deep blue. Irises represent hope, wisdom, faith and admiration. But the meanings of these unique flowers vary with their colors. For example, the yellow iris represents passion, while the purple iris represents royalty, wisdom and compliment.

The Fleur-de-lis, which is a stylized iris, is the symbol of France. The red Fleur-de-lis is on the coat of arms of the Italian city Florence. A yellow iris appears on the flag of Brussels. The Ukrainian coat of arms also bears the stylized form of this flower. It is also considered to be the symbol of Perun, the Slavic god of thunder. The iris is also the floral symbol of Tennessee.
As we see, this delicate flower has been very important throughout the centuries.
Iris flowers have also been used in the production of gin to add some color and taste.
