One fine day you’ll finally manage to realize your wish to start practicing mixed martial arts, or MMA. And you’ll manage to find a good training school and coach.
Do you know what your next step is? Right. You need to choose good protective equipment and clothing.
MMA is considered to be a sport that joins the techniques of both traditional and non-traditional martial arts. Like any other martial arts, it makes your spirit and will stronger. And, of course, just like in any other martial arts, you may get injuries during your trainings and competitions. That’s why choosing the right MMA gear that will protect you from possible injuries is very important.
There is a huge variety of protective equipment for MMA fighters, and different styles of MMA require different equipment. Though there are some protective items that are common for almost all styles:
- Gloves. MMA gloves are among the most essential protective equipment, since they protect your hands and don’t hinder your movements. When buying gloves, try to choose durable ones, made of fine materials, even if they are a bit more expensive. Also pay attention to comfort: the gloves must fit your hand perfectly, otherwise they’ll be a big trouble for you. Choose heavier fight gloves for your trainings, and lighter ones for your competitions. When you train with heavy gloves, your speed and agility will become much better, and it will be easier for you to fight with light gloves during the competitions.
- Helmet. Is it really necessary to say that a good helmet is very important, especially for the beginners? I think it’s obvious. Choose a helmet that is made from thick materials, since they are both more durable and protective.
- Mouth guard. A mouth guard is perhaps one of the most important protective items–as its name implies, it will protect your mouth and teeth. There are many different types of mouth guards, but when choosing one pay attention to their comfort. The mouth guard shouldn’t cause you any discomfort and impede your breathing.
Good, comfortable MMA Shorts are also very important during both trainings and competitions. Some fighters also use knee and elbow pads for extra protection.
Remember, whatever equipment you choose, it must provide you free movement, great comfort and good protection. But whenever you decide to buy protective equipment, don’t forget to consult with your coach first!
